Design begins with light

Alexander Brikman

Light as an architectural statement

For us, light is more than just a means to an end. It structures space, directs attention, influences well-being – and ultimately determines the quality of a place. The aim of our lighting design was to distinguish the various rooms in our studio from one another not only functionally but also atmospherically – while ensuring maximum safety and orientation.

The choice fell on XAL

We became aware of XAL through our design partner Böhmler Büro & Objekt with project lead Patricia Fröhlich. The recommendation was supported by several parties – we were particularly impressed by the balance between design, functionality, and value for money. We were supported by Philipp Weckmer, project manager at XAL. He was our contact person throughout the entire project, provided honest advice on the selection of suitable luminaires, and was regularly on site. With technical expertise, a trained eye for aesthetics, and valuable advice on topics such as light reflections on floor coverings, he was much more than a technical consultant to us.

Light zones with intention – functional aesthetics & neurophysiology.

The lighting design at New Health Society follows a clear zoned structure – tailored to the use, emotion, design, and physiological state of our members.
This is because light not only influences what we see – it also influences how we feel, think, and act.
Bright light with a high blue component, such as that used in the changing rooms or in the equipment area, has an activating effect on the sympathetic nervous system. It increases alertness, pulse rate, and concentration – ideal conditions for focused and goal-oriented training.
Subdued lighting, such as in the entrance area or lounge zones, activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for regeneration, rest, and relaxation. It lowers cortisol levels, reduces stress, and conveys a feeling of security. This effect is no coincidence. Our lighting concept was designed so that each zone is not only functional but also neurophysiologically appropriate:
Entrance area: Dimmed lights create a calming atmosphere. The travertine bar front is deliberately highlighted. Members step out of their everyday stress and into an environment that shuts down the system – a real re-entry for body and mind.
Corridors: The route guidance with directional lighting prepares you for your workout – subconsciously increasing your activation.
Changing rooms: With vertical mirror lighting, high lux levels, and color-neutral light, we create perfect visibility – for self-perception, styling, or simply the good feeling of being ready.
Free weights area: Large-area luminaires ensure glare-free training – especially for exercises such as bench presses. Here, function takes precedence over effect lighting.
Equipment area: Spotlights on a modular rail system showcase our equipment in a targeted manner – with clear lighting accents that support the design language of the machines. The lighting effect is reminiscent of an art installation – stylish, minimalist, effective.

Technical precision – behind the design

The technical planning was carried out by the lighting design team at XAL under the direction of Philipp Weckmer.
✔ Zone-based lighting calculations taking into account reflection levels, room heights, materials, and daylight patterns
✔ Modular rail system for maximum flexibility in case of changes and future expansion
✔ Deliberately understated luminaires with a clear design language – in keeping with the minimalist overall aesthetic
Some highlights from the luminaire portfolio used:
BO 55 Intrack LED – flexible spots for targeted accent lighting
MITA Circle & VELA 600 – for uniform general lighting with indirect light component
STRETTA & SASSO 60 – discreet wall luminaires for corridor guidance and mirror zones
The illuminance levels were balanced at up to 544 lx with high uniformity – a sign of technical excellence.

Collaboration with attitude & precision

What made the collaboration with XAL so special was the combination of professional clarity and personal exchange. It wasn’t just a matter of delivering, but of actively contributing ideas. They responded flexibly to last-minute changes without losing sight of the overall concept.

Conclusion: Light becomes language

Today, light at New Health Society is not just functional – it is an integral part of our spatial concept. It tells a story, guides, connects. It makes our studio what it should be: a space for clarity, concentration, and aesthetics.
We would like to thank the entire XAL team for their excellent creative and technical collaboration.
